How Long Should You Wait Before Seeking Fertility Help

If you haven't been able to get pregnant, a fertility specialist will complete testing and offer treatments to improve the odds of a pregnancy.

It’s the dreaded question among couples trying to conceive — how long should we wait before seeking fertility help? Fertility treatment can create intense emotional weight — but IVF in Mexico providers say speaking with someone can help patients cope and find a solution.

“Paying attention to the emotional aspect is important,” states Dr. Edna Amaro, Medical Director of LIV Fertility Center in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. “Most patients, I have come to understand, find the emotional adversity is much more difficult than the physical counterpart of IVF.”

Fertility issues are common — female infertility and male infertility. More than 12 percent of women have difficulties getting pregnant. If you haven’t been able to get pregnant, a fertility specialist will complete fertility testing and offer treatments to improve the odds of a pregnancy.

See a fertility specialist if:

  • You’re age 35 or younger and you’ve been trying to get pregnant for a year.
  • You’re over age 35 and you’ve been trying for more than six months.
  • You’re over age 40 and you’d like to start a family.

When It’s Time to Check for Fertility Issues

Are You Under 35 and Healthy?

Wait a year. Believe it or not, it can take a young couple up to 12 months to get pregnant. Providers recommend patients in their 20s and early 30s try to conceive or at least not use birth control for 12 months before seeking fertility help.

Are You Over the Age of 35?

Wait six months. After 35, a woman is regarded as advanced maternal age. After 35, the chances of conceiving start dropping. Providers recommend if you haven’t conceived after half a year, see a fertility specialist called a reproductive endocrinologist (RE).

Are You Over the Age of 40?

Right away. After 40, a woman’s eggs drop in quality as well as quantity, so not only are the chances of conceiving fewer, but the risk for miscarriage is higher. If you have reached the age of 40, you are more likely to need fertility treatment, and it’s best to schedule a fertility consult.
