IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization, a method of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) which has helped millions of couples overcome infertility. IVF specialists collect eggs from the ovaries and fertilize them with sperm in a laboratory. The IVF treatment process is often combined with other fertility treatment methods to increase the success rate of pregnancy. ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is usually used to induce fertilization. The sperm is inserted into the center of the egg’s cytoplasm using a thin, hollow needle. After the eggs fertilize, an embryo transplant implants the resulting embryos into the uterus
1.Induced ovulation:
To help doctors control the timing of ovulation and to stimulate the ovaries, the female IVF recipient is prescribed fertility drugs which increase egg production.
2. Regular blood tests and vaginal ultrasounds monitor the ovaries to determine the best time for egg collection. Mature ova is taken during egg collection. A hormone injection to help mature the eggs is given 36 hours before the egg collection.
3.To harvest the eggs, fertility doctors insert a very thin needle into the ovary follicles and use suction to remove eggs individually. The needle is attached to an internal ultrasound probe to guide the specialists through the procedure.
4. Sperm is collected from the male partner using various methods of sperm retrieval. The sperm is then washed and analyzed. Healthy sperm are selected to fertilized the ova.
5. To increase the chance of fertilization, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is often used. ICSI injects the sperm into the center of the egg's cytoplasm. After the sperm has been placed with the egg, fertilization occurs. For embryo transplantation to be successful, the fertilized cells are left to multiply before being inserted into the uterus.
6. Embryos are transferred into the uterus 1-5 days after fertilization. It is becoming common for IVF specialists to implant embryos 5 days after fertilization, during the blastocyst stage of development, to ensure the embryo is mature. Embryo implantation is usually painless and is performed as an outpatient procedure. Using a catheter, embryos are transferred into the uterus through the cervix. The patient is required to rest for 2 hours after the procedure before returning home.
7. A pregnancy test will be given 12-15 days after the embryo transfer. If the IVF cycle has been successful, women will experience a normal pregnant.
The IVF success rate depends on many factors. Success rates of in vitro fertilization depend on the age of the woman, the number of embryos transferred, the quality of the embryos and the fertility clinic. The rate of successful conception per IVF cycle can range from 10-50%.
Fertility doctors understand that infertility treatment can be stressful for couples, particularly if they are traveling for treatment. To help cope with the process, it is important that any questions about treatment are addressed to the doctors. Understanding how in vitro fertilization works, the procedure involved, the success rates of treatment and the factors that increase the chance of successful fertilization can reduce the stress of IVF. Keep in mind that if you are traveling, your body will be under more stress. Make sure you drink lots of water and try to obtain ample Vitamin D from the sun and fresh air to conquer jet-lag.
